How to Save Money When Traveling

June 14, 2011 by

Traveling is costly and keeps getting more expensive all the time.  Not only have airfare prices gone up, but everything associated with travel has been on the rise.  There are some ways to save money as well as some ways to avoid extra charges.

Try to save money on your airfare by purchasing your ticket well in advance.  Check with the travel agent to find out about any special fares that you may qualify for.  Be sure to ask about refunds if you need to make flight changes.  Sometimes the price to change the reservation is more than you paid for the ticket in the first place.  Find out if you need to pay extra for food on the flight and eat before you leave instead.

Airlines have recently created lots of extra charges that can really add up when you’re traveling.  Most airlines only allow one checked bag.  They also have a specific weight allowance for each suitcase.  There are hefty charges for additional bags and for bags that are overweight.  Before you pack, check with your airline to find out the current rules.  Pack lightly so that you can stay within the one-bag rule.  If you’re going for an extended trip consider sending some of your things through the mail or by shipping company.

Parking in the airport lot can be expensive.  If you’re going to be parked for a day or more you’ll want to find a cheaper option.  Consider using an offsite parking lot.  They are typically quite a bit less than airport lots and offer plenty of features that make it better.  You’ll be able to make a reservation online so that you’re assured of getting a parking spot.  Also, you can utilize valet parking for added convenience.

Package Deals

When you’re going to a resort location, consider buying a package deal.  The packages often provide you with all the same amenities that you’d otherwise get, but at a less expensive price.  Look for packages that include as many things as possible to get the most for your money.  Consider the things that you’d buy anyway such as a rental car, meals and spa or golf outings.  If you’re a golfer, you can often save a bundle by using a golf package.

When to Travel

You can often save money by traveling during the least busy times.  Look online to find the area’s off-season.  You’ll find rates are often much less money during that time.  But be careful because some attractions may not be open.  Book your travel well ahead of time so that you will get your first choice of dates.  If you must travel during a peak season, check with the hotel directly to find out if they have any special prices or deals.

Coupons and Group Rates

Always be on the lookout for special deals and coupons.  You can often save 10% or more on travel, hotel, meals and attractions by using coupons.  Inquire at the hotel and car rental agency about group rates.  If you’re a member of AAA or AARP you’ll qualify for a lower rate.
