Tips for the First Time Traveler

October 21, 2011 by

If you have never flown on an airplane or done any large amount of traveling before, you certainly have a great deal of excitement ahead of you. You may be feeling nervous as well though. After all, ask anyone, and you will hear horror stories of trying to find parking, dealing with airport security and managing travel costs. You do not have to listen to those horror stories, and if you follow some easy tips, you can have an excellent travel experience. Do not let the worry get in the way of a great trip. Instead, follow these tips and you will find yourself totally at ease anytime you need to travel.

Plan Early

If possible, it is best to plan your trip several weeks to a month in advance. There are many reasons for this. Of course, the more time you have to plan, the slower you can take the process and make sure you do not overlook anything. In addition, when you schedule your flight and your hotel room early, you can actually save a great deal of money. Flights cost more the closer you get to the actual day of the flight. The same often holds true for hotels. The sooner you book things, the more money you can save and the better you can plan your trip.

Do Not Forget Transportation

You may overlook it, but you will need a way to get to the airport. If you do not plan your transportation, you could find yourself in a bind. If you plan to drive yourself and leave your vehicle, you will need to choose the best option for parking. Off-site parking lots can be much more affordable, but you will need to make sure that they provide a shuttle to the terminal. If cost is not the concern and time is, you can even reserve your parking in advance. This way, you will already know where your parking space is and you will not have to drive around lots looking for a spot to park.

Understand the Airport

If you do not know what to expect, airport security can definitely take you by surprise. The security is pretty strict, so you need to understand how it works. You will need to go through the x-ray machines, which will include placing all of your carry-on items in bins. You will need to take off your shoes, your belt and all jewelry too. The more you can limit what you have to take off, the easier it will be to get through these security lines.

Additionally, you need to make sure you list your name on your ticket just as it is listed on your ID. This is a TSA regulation. You will be required to show your ID and your ticket a few times and if the names do not match, you will be slowed down significantly.

If you are traveling for the first time, these easy tips can make your travel much simpler. You do not have to be overwhelmed or nervous and you can enjoy your trip.
